I might be getting a horse on our land and my dad is worried that the horse will eat the bark off the trees and kill them like my aunts horse did on the property years ago. And yes i know that its toxic to horses it eat oak and red maple tree leaves and such. So how can i prevent the horse from eating the bark? And if it eats the bark will it get sick?

I have a miniature horse yearling colt and I can’t get him to respect the electric fences because he has such a thick coat, but I can’t erect permanent wire fences either as this is a rental property. I was considering clipping him all over so he feels the zap stronger and learns to respect the hot wire, but I don’t want his mane growing back thicker afterwards.

Please keep in mind that I live in Australia and we have VERY hot weather at the moment, so he definitely won’t miss his thick winter coat if I clip it anyway.

The horse is new to our property, so we stuck her in the barn, but our stud horses broke out and chased her through the fence and she got a huge cash on her wound that scabbed over and began to swell like a baseball, then we turned her loose in the field for a day and the swelling basically ‘exploded’ and now she has a hole in her neck about an inch deem and 5-7 inches wide, we have been taking great are of her before and even since it happened by wrapping the wound and putting this stuff designed to increase the healing process.
Just today we removed the wrap after it was on overnight and found maggots inside the wound. We have since flushed the wound with water and got the maggots out, but there were a few still left that were sorta ‘attached’ to the skin. My mom says magots will eat all the dead skin and not to worry about them, but won’t they eat live skin too?
I forgot to add that I did take her to the vet when the cut first happened, she gave us some stuff to put on the wound daily, then the wound started to swell up so she told us to make a small cut on it to release the puss, and it worked, but then we turned her loose and she rolled around and it popped, we waited about 9 hours to take her to the vet and the vet said we waited to long and she would not work on the horse. …

Every lease term seems to make it a requirement for the horse to stay on their property. Is there a site or place that leases out horses off property?

I have been boarding my horse for the past 10yrs and have been paying roughly $400.00 per month. I am now interested in finding my own place with a small stable (6 horses max) to keep my horse there and take in 5 boarders (asking $300.00 per month for rent). I am looking for a place so I can turn the horses out all day long, and will feed 2x a day. I am wondering how much it is per month to care for 6 horses. How much do you spend on hay, feed and shavings? I live in IL about 20mins south of Chicago. I am looking for a place in the cook county area, if that helps. Also, how much do you pay for property taxes a year? I don’t want to buy a place, find out it costs way too much and go into debt. Any info will help

I do not plan on having an arena, this will be property for older horses or horses that can no longer be ridden.
I will be feeding the horses, cleaning the stalls and providing turnout for all of the horses. I do not plan on hiring anyone to do the work. Also, all the barns in my area are more expensive than 300.00 per month and most only provide all day turnout for the older horses no riding facility, like mine.

I have 2 horses. One is 25 and the other is 19. I got them about 3 weeks ago from an adoption agency. Since he has been here, he has been missing blotches of hair on his face and is bald on this blotches. I folded over his face mane(the part of hair that covers his forehead) and there is a bald spot at the roots too. I contacted the person I got these horses from and she has no idea what is causing this. None of her horses ever had nor currently have any problems. I haven’t had any other horses on my property, especially ones with this problem. He is 25 and I don’t know what to do. The other horse has absolutely no problems at all and I just don’t understand what is causing this. He is constantly rubbing and biting himself on his legs, neck, body, and is always rubbing his face up on trees. What can I do about this? What is causing this? My dad thinks it is mites, but how do I get rid of them and keep them away? HELP!!!

My dream is owning horses. Should I live in a apratment or live in a house on horse property? I read how much one horse’s care would cost a year. (vet bills, farrier, hay for summer and or other seasons, cost of hay per horse, fly spray, wormers, farm fence and barn maintanence, and ect.) But right now I’m not sure what direction I should go in. I understand how much horses cost just to buy. And I also know that someone would need to make a decent living just to take care of themelves, their car (gas and insurance), mortage, water, heating and gas bills. But how much money would I need to make of year to take care of my horse(s), me and my house bills? And what if you are living by yourself?
I am not a yard person. I love horses!!

I live in Santa Rosa county Florida. My zoning says that I am in a mixed residential subdivision. I have enough land to have a horse on my property but will the county let me? The zoning commission hasn’t been very helpful in the matter. Can anyone help me?

I was wondering how much it would cost yearly to maintain a horse. I would like to buy one, eventually, to ride. I would have to board it somewhere as I don’t live anyplace where I could keep a horse on my property. Roughly, what are the common expenses in a year that I would have to contend with?
